32, 10, 5, 1: What it’s Like Being the Winner
Brittany Lyseng reflects on her journey over the last month in the Seattle International Comedy Competition
I can’t even begin to tell you how honored I am!!!!
A month ago we started this journey with 32 comedians from all over North America. When I left Calgary I packed a bag and told my family, “it could be a week or a month” … I really didn’t know. Some of my biggest heroes have won this contest and if anything, I just thought “Holly shit, I can’t believe I get to do this”.
From 32, to 10, to 5, to 1
15 shows in 18 days all over Washington with some of the most talented people I’ve ever met. I can honestly say I was shocked every step of the way and I continue to be in awe of the comedians I had the honor of performing alongside.
Every night I called my parents at 1am to report in and my Mom & Dad just kept saying …
“HOLY SHIT, FUCKEN EH RIGHT, YOU GOT THIS. KEEP GOING”, it became our little (very Alberta) nightly mantra.
The outpouring of support has been overwhelmingly beautiful. And i can’t thank enough, the comics, friends and family who have messaged me from all over the globe to offer words of wisdom, kindness and support throughout. I’m not sure what I did to deserve that kinda love but I am eternally grateful for it.
Thank you so much to the team at Seattle International Comedy Competition!
Taylor Clark went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and keep our spirits high on and off stage. There are few people on this planet who can bring people together the way he does. Creating panels, inviting us into his home for brunch and coffee, even inviting us into his family home to share Thanksgiving. The food, the laughs and the love might be the only reason I stayed sane in the final round. You are incredible sir!
And finally It’s not lost on me the kind of work and passion that goes into building something the lasts 44 years, all while maintaining its integrity and prestige. The amount you’d have to love comedy to create this kind of a space for comedians is truly beyond human comprehension. I will be eternally grateful for this incredible opportunity that Jon Fox continues to create.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
What a wild ride we are on.
FUCKEN EH RIGHT , KEEP GOING!
